Milwaukee Soccer Weekend Preview

This weekend is a big weekend for the Panthers on the pitch, and big might be an understatement. Both the Panther Men and Women are in action at home with very important matches over the weekend.

The Panther Women kick off the weekend with the annual Pink Out game to raise breast cancer awareness.  The Panthers (6-4-2) take on Valparaiso (5-5-3) in a rematch of the 2009 Horizon League Championship game. It will be the first game played on the newly resurfaced Engelmann Field.

If that isn’t enough incentive to check this match out, Junior Sarah Hagen has an opportunity to score her school and league record 58th career goal. Things are shaping up to a potentially historic night at Engelmann field when the Panthers and Crusaders hit the pitch at 7 p.m.

The Milwaukee Men make their 2010 Engelmann Field debut on Saturday when they battle in-state rival Green Bay for the Chancellor’s Cup.  The Panthers are looking to avenge a 2-0 setback against the Phoenix last season.

Milwaukee enters the match with a 2-2-0 mark in Horizon League play. The Panthers are coming off of a thrilling 1-0 victory at Cleveland State on Sunday behind a double overtime winner from freshman Jordan Record.

Green Bay, the defending Horizon League champions, is off to a slow start with a 1-2 conference record. After dropping its first two Horizon League matches to Butler and Cleveland State, Green Bay picked up its first conference win with a 4-0 thumping of Detroit on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, the Milwaukee Women will close out the weekend with an afternoon match against the Butler Bulldogs.

As of Friday, the Bulldogs are 3-9-0 on the season with a 1-1-0 record in Horizon League play.  Butler will face Green Bay on Friday evening before traveling down I-43 to take on the Panthers on Sunday.  Sophomore Katie Griswold has scored six of the nine goals scored by the Bulldogs in 2010. The Bulldogs have been shutout in six of its twelve matches this season.
