Weekend Recap

The Milwaukee Panthers Men’s and Women’s soccer teams were busy on the pitch over the weekend, with both teams playing two matches.

The Women knocked off a pair of Big XII opponents in the Kansas Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers. Friday night in Lawrence, Kansas, the Panthers pulled out a thrilling 1-0 win over the Jayhawks on a Sarah Hagen goal in overtime (assisted by Keara Thompson).  The 1-0 victory was the first shutout for the Panthers in 2010.

On Sunday, Milwaukee played through wet conditions at Missouri and scored three goals on only five shots to hang on for a 3-2 triumph over the Tigers.  After falling behind 1-0, the Panthers scored three unanswered goals from Makenzie Gillespie, Sarah Hagen, and Keara Thompson and held off a late offensive attack from the Tigers.

The pair of wins over the weekend puts Milwaukee at 4-3-2 on the season as it prepares for its Horizon League opener at Youngstown State on Friday.

Milwaukee Men’s Soccer was on the road as well as it took part in the Wisconsin Soccer Classic in Madison.  Friday night the Panthers took on the Dayton Flyers.  Despite outshooting Dayton 15-12, Milwaukee couldn’t find the back of the net and fell to a 2-0 defeat.

The Panthers faced off against the San Diego State Aztecs on Sunday. Despite having many opportunities to take the game in overtime, the Panthers and Aztecs finished with a 1-1 draw.   One of the best chances came for Milwaukee when Cody Banks took an overtime penalty kick, but it was drilled off the crossbar.  Andrew Wiedabach scored Milwaukee’s only goal early in the game at the 8:27 mark.

After the weekend the Milwaukee men are at 1-3-2 and open up Horizon League play on Friday when the team travels to Valparaiso to take on the Crusaders.
